Suppression of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in central Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76 TeV

Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral collisions, corresponding to 0-5% and 70-80% of the hadronic Pb-Pb cross section. The measured charged particle spectra in η<0.8|\eta|<0.8 and 0.3<pT<200.3 < p_T < 20 GeV/cc are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}, scaled by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification factor RAAR_{\rm AA}. The result indicates only weak medium effects (RAAR_{\rm AA} \approx 0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions, RAAR_{\rm AA} reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at pT=6p_{\rm T}=6-7GeV/cc and increases significantly at larger pTp_{\rm T}. The measured suppression of high-pTp_{\rm T} particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies, indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages, 5 captioned figures, 3 tables, authors from page 10, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/98

    Two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76 TeV

The first measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. We observe a growing trend with energy now not only for the longitudinal and the outward but also for the sideward pion source radius. The pion homogeneity volume and the decoupling time are significantly larger than those measured at RHIC.Comment: 17 pages, 5 captioned figures, 1 table, authors from page 12, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/388

(excerpt) For many years, Odonatologists “toiled” in relative obscurity. Oh, we knew that dragonflies and damselflies were really fascinating, but with few books other than Needham and Westfall and the 3 volumes of Odonata of Canada and Alaska, it appeared that identifying Odes required arcane knowledge and a fascination for wing venation

Synthesis and Antibacterial Activity of N,N-Diethyl-3-substituted-2-(4-methyl-phenylsulfonamido)alkanamides and their Arylsulfonamide Precursors

A series of N,N-diethyl-3-substituted-2-(4-methylphenylsulfon amido)alkanamides (8a-k) and their arylsulfonamide precursors (7a-k) have been synthesized via facile approach. The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed by analytical data and spectroscopic means. The in vitro antibacterial screening of these compounds along with streptomycin, showed N,N-diethyl-2-(4-methylphenylsulfonamido) -3-phenylpropanamide (8j) to be the most active agent on Escherichia coli at MIC of 12.5 μg/mL and on Staphylococcus aureus at MIC of 25 μg/mL

Quark antiquark energies and the screening mass in a Quark-Gluon plasma at low and high temperatures

We discuss quark antiquark energies and the screening mass in hot QCD using the non-perturbative lattice approach. For this purpose we analyze properties of quark antiquark energies and entropies at infinitely large separation of the quark antiquark pair at low and high temperatures. In the limit of high temperatures these energies and entropies can be related perturbatively to the temperature dependence of the Debye mass and the coupling. On the one hand our analysis thus suggests that the quark antiquark energies at (infinite) large distances are rather related to the Debye screening mass and the coupling than to the temperature dependence of heavy-light meson masses. On the other hand we find no or only little differences in all mass scales introduced by us when changing from quenched to 2-flavor QCD at temperatures which are only moderately above the phase transition.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, To appear in the proceedings of Workshop on Extreme QCD, Swansea, Wales, 2-5 Aug 200

BV and BFV Formulation of a Gauge Theory of Quadratic Lie Algebras in 2-d and a Construction of W3 Topological Gravity

The recently proposed generalized field method for solving the master equation of Batalin and Vilkovisky is applied to a gauge theory of quadratic Lie algebras in 2-dimensions. The charge corresponding to BRST symmetry derived from this solution in terms of the phase space variables by using the Noether procedure, and the one found due to the BFV-method are compared and found to coincide. W3W_3 algebra, formulated in terms of a continuous variable is emploied in the mentioned gauge theory to construct a W3W_3 topological gravity. Moreover, its gauge fixing is briefly discussed.Comment: 12 pages, Plain Latex (latex twice

Effects of quantum deformation on the spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm problem

In this letter we study the Aharonov-Bohm problem for a spin-1/2 particle in the quantum deformed framework generated by the κ\kappa-Poincar\'{e}-Hopf algebra. We consider the nonrelativistic limit of the κ\kappa-deformed Dirac equation and use the spin-dependent term to impose an upper bound on the magnitude of the deformation parameter ε\varepsilon. By using the self-adjoint extension approach, we examine the scattering and bound state scenarios. After obtaining the scattering phase shift and the SS-matrix, the bound states energies are obtained by analyzing the pole structure of the latter. Using a recently developed general regularization prescription [Phys. Rev. D. \textbf{85}, 041701(R) (2012)], the self-adjoint extension parameter is determined in terms of the physics of the problem. For last, we analyze the problem of helicity conservation.Comment: 12 pages, no figures, submitted for publicatio
